STATE TDC UPDATES FROM ATA:

4/18/12
- Clarification on a paragraph in the Facts for Drivers: Page 80 last paragraph, third sentence related to following distance. Should read as follows:

For a typical straight truck or tractor-28ft. trailer unit, if you are driving below 40 mph, you should leave at least one second for every 10 feet of vehicle length. For a typical tractor-trailer, this results in 4 seconds between you and the vehicle ahead. For speeds over 40 mph, the CMV driver should leave one additional second for every 10 feet of vehicle length.

The current wording is unfortunately confusing. Here are some examples to help clarify:

If you are driving a 40-foot vehicle at speeds under 40 mph, leave 4 seconds between you and the vehicle ahead. One second for each 10 feet of vehicle length = 1X4 or 4 seconds.

If you are driving a 40-foot vehicle at speeds over 40 mph, leave 5 seconds between you and the vehicle ahead. One second for each 10 feet of vehicle length plus an additional second for safety: 1X4 = 4 plus an extra second for safety = 5 seconds.

  • If you are driving a 60-foot vehicle at speeds under 40 mph, leave 6 seconds between you and the vehicle ahead. One second for each 10 feet of vehicle length = 1X6 or 6 seconds.
  • If you are driving a 60-foot vehicle at speeds over 40 mph, leave 7 seconds between you and the vehicle ahead. One second for each 10 feet of vehicle length plus an additional second for safety: 1X6 = 6 plus an extra second for safety = 7 seconds.

2/27/12 - The National Truck Driving Championships Committee has voted to reduce the “retirement” period that a Step Van Driver is required to “sit out” to one year rather than two. In other words, drivers who won the step van class at the state level two years in a row and/or competed in the NSVDC two years in a row must only sit out only one year from the step van class. The 2-year retirement rule continues to apply to all other classes of competition.
